Notes - Hello Johan and Judy
Firstly, thank you very much for your work in constructing the Maw family database and making it available online. It is a great piece of work, which I am sure is appreciated by lots of people.
I am writing re my grandfather Thomas Maw (ID 32133) because I think he is likely to be Thomas Maw (ID 6987) in your database. I do not have any documentary proof (I would welcome any suggestions to obtain such!) but these are my reasons:
(a) the sister of Thomas (6987), Annie Maw, was a visitor to the Payne family in the 1901 Census and my grandfather married Alice Payne after the death of her first husband John Payne. It would seem too much of a coincidence for there to be no connection.
(b) I know from conversations with an older family member who knew my grandfather well that Thomas Maw was a Peat Cutter in Thorne as a young man and later lived in Cumbria before the first world war. This is consistent with Census records in 1901 and 1911. He moved to Sheffield to work in the steelworks and after the war he acquired a couple of army surplus horses to start a carting business.
(c) I remember as a child visiting, with my grandfather, an aunty who lived in Millom, Cumbria. I think that this may be Thomas's sister Betsy.
For your information my grandfather died 7 Nov 1967 in Sheffield
I have attached an old photo of my grandfather with some unknown person who may be his sister in case this is useful.
Thank you.
Alan Maw
