| Notes |
- William b.1871, the eldest son of David Waters Cook and Alison Smith, was (according to Margaret Counsel) never in Australia with the rest of the Cook family, but sought his fortune in the gold mines of South Africa. He worked for over 12 years there, and visited his home in Methil several times. He died in Johannesburg in 1907 of the 'fell disease that works such havoc among the miners of the Rand'. In the 1901 census he (29, stone miner) is living at Smith's Buildings, Connercial Street, Methil, with Catherine Macdonald (34, born Methil) and four children, Annie (9), David (7), Alison (2) and William (5mo.)
