Neva Ruth (Butler) Maw
March 29, 1921 ~ February 25, 2012
Neva, 90, was born in Wellston, OK to Earlie and Susan (Haun) Butler. Her family moved to Chelan County in Washington in 1922, then later across the river to the Douglas County side, to an area known as "Beebe". Her mother passed away in 1928, leaving her and her three siblings to be watched over by their grandmother. She had fond memories of attending school in the Pioneer School building and then, after the fourth grade, finishing her education in Chelan with the class of 1940. Upon her graduation, she was employed by W.E. Gurr in their photo lab, where she was able to use her artistic talents to enhance black and white photos with color, before color film was available. Other highlights included being selected "Princess Beebe" in 1939, and a memorable trip to Alaska with the Rainbow Girls Club. In 1941, she married Vernon Maw in a double wedding ceremony, along with lifelong friends, Harold and Barbara Simonsen. After spending a year in Portland, OR, where she was a photo finisher for Sandy's Photography, they returned to the Beebe area, continuing in the orchard work until 1950, when they moved to Mansfield, WA and raised their four children. Besides being a homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother, Neva was employed as a Post Office clerk and grocery clerk. She was very active in her community with school events, church, Garden Club, past President of the Lady Eagles Auxiliary and a newspaper correspondent. In 1975, she and Vernon moved to East Wenatchee, where they enjoyed many years golfing as members of the Rock Island Golf Club; traveling in their RV, including spending many winters in Arizona; caretakers at the Lake Woods golf course; rock hounding with the Ginkgo Mineral Society; and Neva's favorite hobby of painting as a member of the Cascade Artists group. Taking tours and making new friends with the Wenatchee Valley Seniors also filled their lives with fun activities and memories of good times.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Donald and Carl Butler. Neva is survived by her husband of 70 years, Vernon of East Wenatchee; sister, June Boedigheimer of Enumclaw; and children, Ruth (Melvin) Fisher of East Wenatchee, Jeanette (Dell) Cavadini of Mansfield, Nancy McDanold of Marysville and Edwin (Jean) Maw of Soap Lake. Other survivors include eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Neva's Life will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wenatchee First Assembly of God, 1520 McKittrick Street. Memorials may be made to your local Alzheimer Association or charity of your choice, in Neva's name.
