Wasilla resident James A. Maw, 57, died July 10, 2004, at home. A funeral with a viewing was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 901 Bogard Road in Wasilla. Burial was at Kenai Cemetery.
Mr. Maw was born Jan. 17, 1947, in Malheur County, Ore. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor's degree in education. He attended BYU on a full athletic scholarship in track and field and participated nationally and internationally in sprints, hurdles and relay teams. He had recently completed his doctorate in occupational health and safety. He had a great love for adventure and for wide-open spaces and brought his family to Alaska 17 years ago. While living in Alaska, he taught in the education field in Anchorage and was involved in the commercial fishing industry, charter fishing in Cook Inlet and Prince William Sound. His employment in the last 10 years was as an occupational health and safety manager in the oil industry. He worked in various places from the North Slope to Adak and most recently in Singapore. His family wrote: "Jim had a great love for his family and friends. He was always willing to help wherever he could or give friendly advice when asked." He was preceded in death by his father, Roland Maw Sr.; and sisters, Mary Lou and Linda.
Mr. Maw is survived by his wife, Terry; and their children and spouses, Todd and Deena Maw of Palmer, Jaron Maw of Roy, Utah, Aaron and Misty Brown of Clearfield, Utah, Jared and Amber Brown of Kenai, Kelly and Tracey Ball of Wasilla, Jamie and Steve Johnson of Roy, Jonika and David Blanke of Roy, Jeree and Brandon Greenwood of Syracuse, Utah, Julie and Rex Elmer of Ogden, Utah, Amy and Rod Terry of Syracuse, Jennifer and Sean Janes of Wasilla, and Jillian and Parker Burrup of Kaysville, Utah; and 36 grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother, Cleone Maw of St. George, Utah; brothers, Roland Maw of Kasilof, and Robert Maw of Pinedale, Wyo.; and sisters, Suezun Hilburn of St. George, and Janet Engelke of Hooper, Utah.
Burial: Kenai City Cemetery
