Edna Florence Maw Rampey, 88, of Greenville, wife of Cdr. Alvin H. Rampey USN (Ret.), died Saturday February 26, 2011 at the Woodlands at Furman.
Born in Central, SC, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. and Maggie Powell Maw. She was a devout Christian, devoted wife and mother who always put God first in life.
Mrs. Rampey was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville and the Chamblin Sunday School Class.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dr. Vin and Jada Rampey of Atlanta, GA and a much loved extended family.
She was a 1939 graduate of Easley High School and was a graduate of the College of Commerce, La Salle Institute, Chicago, IL. As a court stenographer and stenotyping teacher at Carolina Commercial College, she continued her education at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, IL and Furman University. She was formerly employed with Universal Credit Company and was an executive assistant at the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. She taught Sunday School classes at First Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, TX and in Waukegan, IL. She was a member of the US Navy Supply Corps Officers Wives club for many years and a former Corpus Christi Jayceette.
Edna loved reading and writing poetry and often wrote loving and cherished poems for her friends and family members. While living in Washington, DC many years ago, she was acknowledged by President John F. Kennedy for a poem she wrote commemorating his inauguration. She was honored to have several of her poems published during her lifetime.
Friends and family will gather on Wednesday March 2, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Howze Mortuary Chapel in Travelers Rest, SC to celebrate her wonderful life. Visitation will be from 7:00 until 9:00 pm on Tuesday evening March 1, 2011 at the Howze Mortuary. Entombment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
