[1] Chicago Suburban Daily Herald - William R. Beckmann of Elgin for 18 years A celebration of life service for William R. Beckmann, 84, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at St. James Episcopal Church, West Dundee, with a reception to be held following the service. Born Aug. 21, 1918, in Watertown, Wis., the son of William F. and Martha Beckmann, he died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Sherman Hospital. Interment will be in the churchyard of St. James Episcopal Church. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a bachelor of arts degree in 1941, Bill served with honor as a tank battalion commander, seeing action in Europe in World War II. Professionally, Bill will be remembered for his wit and his journalistic and public relations wisdom, having worked in the newspaper business, the boating business for the Evinrude Outboard Motor Division of OMC, the banking business for the National Boulevard Bank and in retirement, his own business, J&B Communications. A favorite retirement journalistic endeavor of Bill's was working as the editor of St. James' Sword & Shield publication. Bill also enjoyed coaching, golf, gardening, painting, boating and fishing with his children, grandchildren and grandniece. Bill was the beloved husband of 56 years of Jean E. Beckmann (nee Hoffman); father of William E. (Mary Ellen Kanies) Beckmann of Elgin and Betty (Bob) Kelly of Elgin; and grandfather of Jennifer Beckmann, and Katie and Tom Kelly. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Episcopal Church, 516 Washington St., West Dundee, IL 60118.
