Description: Hello. Here's an extract from my writing on my Dowson family..
"When Charles arrived in Saskatoon, he found work as a Board of Health Teamster and set up home at 1327 Ave C North with his wife, Elsie. By 1915 his address was 445 Ave Q South. He was by now a stableman, employed by the City of Saskatoon. Brother Clifton is just across the alley at 446 Ave R South. On 1 April 1916 at the age of thirty, Charles signed up with the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment, 46th Battalion). He made the long journey back to war-torn Europe and trained in England until the Battalion left for Le Havre on 10th August 1916. The unit came to be known as "The Suicide Battalion". The 46th Battalion lost 1,433 killed and 3,484 wounded - a casualty rate of 91.5 percent!
Sadly, Charles was killed on 18 November 1916. It is believed he was engaged in the Battle of â?˜Ancre 1916â?™ - a poorly planned attack on â?˜Desire Trenchâ?™. The attack failed at a cost of 37 casualties to the 46th Battalion. Charles had come through the indescribable terror of the five months of The Battle of the Somme, only to be killed on the last day of that battle. He lies in the Anadac Military Cemetery, Miraumont."
