| 64915 | Vernon Maw was born at home in Roswell, Idaho on June 8, 1927 to Harlan and Marie Maw. He grew up in the eastern Oregon areas of Vale and Nyssa. Vern served in the United States Army from 1947 until 1949 and earned his GED shortly thereafter. Upon his discharge from military service, Vern enrolled at Oregon State University where he earned a degree in wildlife biology. He worked for the State of Oregon as a wildlife biologist in Summer Lake and Prineville, Oregon. Vern married Colleen Caudell and the couple had four children. They lived in Prineville and later divorced. On November 12, 1983, Vern married Dorothy Saunders and moved to Goldendale where he spent several years working for Klickitat Valley hospital before retiring. Vern lived life to the fullest and enjoyed his family and friends. He loved a good joke or playing one on someone. Vern liked hunting, fishing and traveling with Dorothy to places all over the world. He loved flirting with all of the pretty ladies. They enjoyed spending their retirement in Washington and Arizona. Vern passed away at his home in Goldendale on November 14, 2012 at the age of 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; three daughters Colleen Wood, Darlene Witt and her husband John and Janice Sherman; son Russell Maw and his wife Collette; three stepsons Richard Clarry and his wife Nancy, Rob Clarry and his wife Peggy, and Randie Clarry; grandchildren Heather, Danielle, Tiffany, Jenny, Jodi, Jared, Winter, Maggie, Cameron, Brennan, Connor, Whitney, Shelby, Kate, Elizabeth and Becky and seventeen great grandchildren. A memorial service for Vern will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Goldendale on Saturday, November 24 at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow at the American Legion . | 64920 | Virginia Maw Hieb, 86, of Lodi, California, passed away with her family at her side on January 9, 2013, in Lodi, California. Virginia was born on June 5, 1926 in Creston Nebraska to Minnie and Robert Maw and was the 3rd youngest of 12 children. After graduating from Creston High School in Nebraska, she attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and went on to earn a Bachelors degree from College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Virginia met her future husband, Melvin Hieb, at her sister-in-law, Thelma Hieb's wedding where Melvin was the best man. Virginia and Melvin raised their family on their farm east of town where they resided for more than fifty years. Virginia worked as an elementary school teacher for many years, starting out in a one room schoolhouse in Nebraska. In the Lodi Unified School District, she taught 4th grade at Houston School, Lawrence Elementary School, and Reese Elementary School in Lodi. She also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) at Parklane Elementary School in Stockton. A very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lodi since the mid 1950's, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School to several generations of local children. She was also active with the United Methodist Women and various church mission projects. She enjoyed her family, traveling and volunteering. Virginia was a Harmony Grove 4-H leader and 4-H camp counselor in the 1970s. Later, after she retired from teaching, she was a docent for the San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum. Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Hieb, her four sisters and five brothers. Virginia is survived by her son, Michael Hieb, daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Foy and David Foy, daughter and son-in-law, Carol Hieb and Greg Miller, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, brother, Don Maw; sister, Ardeth Greenquist, sister-in-law, Betty Hieb, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Lodi on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the San Joaquin County Historical Society, PO Box 30, Lodi, CA 95241 or the United Methodist Women.
